Academic Excellence

HomeLower School » Message from the Head

Boys and girls at Calvert are eager to learn, excited about their individual journeys, and empowered to change the world. Their overall enthusiasm is fostered through daily instruction in the core subjects: reading, math, and writing. In addition, students receive regular instruction in art, athletics, foreign language, library, music, science, and technology. Our Calvert kids are well-rounded.

In order to best support the differing needs of our students, we place them in developmentally appropriate reading and math groups. This allows teachers to effectively and efficiently differentiate instruction. These groups, however, are not stagnant; they are dynamic and fluid.

If a student's development advances at a pace which is not commensurate with peers, changes are made. We strive to always meet students where they are, challenge them with age-appropriate materials, and facilitate their growth through formal lessons.

Beginning in Seventh Age, students write formal compositions each week. These compositions, along with other assignments, are edited, reviewed by teachers and administrators, and sent home monthly. This sampling of student work (folder papers) is accompanied by the student's monthly report card. Regular communication with parents is key to our home-school partnership.

Teachers at Calvert are committed to educating the whole child. They love their students, are fully invested in curriculum implementation and evaluation, and fully committed to ensuring the academic, interpersonal, and character growth and development of each child. These consummate professionals support student learning through daily engagement, hands-on activities, lateral thinking, games and challenges, public speaking, and artistic expression.

Calvert kids have an unshakable thirst for information, an avid interest in creative enterprises, and a passion for others. The halls, classrooms, and athletic facilities reverberate with the sounds of laughter, investigation, debate, and fun. These are the hallmarks of a healthy school.

We look forward to you experiencing Calvert— longstanding traditions mixed with research-based innovation.
