Calvert's Middle School News- January 27, 2012

January 27, 2012

Dear Middle School Parents,

We look forward with great anticipation to International Week next week! Thank you to all the volunteers who have offered so generously of their time to present to our students on a cultural or national heritage. A special thanks also to Señora Sachar, Madame Bofill-Polsky, Señora Menefee, Magister Pietropaoli, Magistra Robinson-Siemen, Mr. Shawen, and our other faculty presenters, for the design and implementation of this enriching program. As I write this, teachers are busily decorating the building with national flags and vibrant cultural artifacts from the continents of the world – could there be a better surprise in store for your children as they enter school on a mid-winter Monday?

All Parents

International Week: From Señora Sachar: Hola – Bonjour – Salve! International Week starts Monday, January 30! We will be decorating the school this weekend. We will have assemblies Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in the Gymnasium, and workshops on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during study hall, an international menu for lunch, and a contest. New this year is the content of our assemblies, decorating the lounges, and dividing the students into 4 groups to represent 4 continents (Africa, America, Europe, Asia), and our community outreach component: our International Week T-shirts’ proceeds will go to 3 at-risk schools in Africa and Belize. Gracias – Merci – Gratia!

Please see our schedule and international lunch menu for the week, by link at the end of this letter.

7th & 8th Grade Parents

Drug Use Prevention Education: On March 8 and 9, Michelle Kriebel will meet with 7th and 8th Grade classes to discuss decision making and risky behaviors, particularly in the areas of alcohol and drugs. She has been meeting with Calvert students for five years. In addition, she will address the parents of 7th graders on the evening of March 27. Attendance at this event is mandatory for 7th Grade parents.

Michelle received her B.A. in Psychology from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, and a M.Ed. in Counseling and Student Development from the University of Delaware. In addition to consulting, Michelle teaches part-time at McDonogh School.

5th Grade Parents

Student Email: 5th graders received permission to use their Calvert email accounts today. They can access their accounts anywhere with an internet connection. Mr. Williams, our network manager, and I, and the 5th Grade teachers, spent time in classrooms this morning reviewing our policies and procedures for student email. Students are very excited for this privilege, but they must understand what a powerful device email can be. Please find our “Student E-mail Guidelines” by link at the end of this letter. We invite you to discuss them with your 5th grader at home. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of email in school, please contact your child’s teacher or me.
