Fifth Graders Receive Their Official Calvert Email Addresses

Fifth Grade students received their Calvert email accounts last week in Technology class. They discussed both the benefits and pitfalls of digital communication and how the different forms of digital communication require different writing styles. The lesson concluded with students sending an inaugural message to their homeroom teachers.
For over 10 years, Calvert Middle School students have been using laptops in support of their learning. Having their own device provides a great opportunity for students to learn and apply tools for productivity, organization, communication, and creativity. In Fifth Grade, students have a Technology class once a week where they learn about proper care and maintenance of their laptops in addition to principles of responsible use. Google Drive, an online platform for organization and collaboration, is introduced as students are taught strategies for organizing their digital school work. In Grades Six through Eight, students also have the opportunity to take courses in Digital Publications, Design, and Programming, and they continue conversations about digital citizenship as part of the Advisory program.
