Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebrations
The Calvert community celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an all-school assembly on Friday and the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday.
The entire student body came together for an assembly about Dr. King with the theme of "Dignity." Diversity Coordinator Monica Stewart discussed how Dr. King demonstrated dignity even as a child. Lower School students performed two songs to highlight the message, and the Middle School band and chorus performed as well. A video was shown with members of the faculty and staff explaining what "dignity" means to them. It was a very special morning for the community. Many thanks to everyone who helped make it possible!
On Monday, parents, students, and members of the Calvert community engaged in meaningful activities to benefit the greater community at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
The morning began with an interactive and uplifting presentation from Ssuuna, a dancer, drummer, singer, songwriter, and storyteller from Uganda. He had the 315 participants on their feet dancing. After the presentation, everyone participated in various service activities. These included going to Paul’s Place, making sandwiches for the homeless, lending voices to record popular children’s books for pediatric patients, and making educational crafts.
Another highlight of the day was the leadership that so many community members provided. Seventh Graders who attended helped with registration, ran activities, provided directions around campus, and entertained the youngest children. Current and former Calvert employees as well as Johns Hopkins University students acted as activity leaders and helped throughout the day.
It was a true community event as everyone was engaged in helping to make a meaningful difference while having fun!
