Jay Parker Teaches Leadership by Example

Jay Parker, Middle School Teacher and Leadership Program Director, is a member of the AIMS Student Leadership Development Committee. The committee oversees the AIMS Student Leadership Development Workshop, an annual conference that emphasizes anyone who interacts with students has the opportunity to teach leadership skills.
Parker presented the closing remarks at the conference, which took place on Thursday. He facilitated a conversation on how to go back to your school, build allies, advocate for leadership programs in conversations with administrators, and build for the long-term.

As a graduate of the Gardner Carney Leadership Institute, Parker continues to emphasize the importance of leadership and mold leaders here at Calvert. Parker states, “I believe that all students have the potential to be leaders and all schools have a responsibility to fulfill this potential. At Calvert, our leadership program is grounded in this philosophy.”

The Seventh Grade Leadership program tasks each student with leading an outreach, diversity, or admission event. Parker and other Calvert teachers coach them along the way to make it a meaningful and successful experience.

Parker continues, “Ultimately, the idea of empowering students is not a new one, but at Calvert, we are creating a culture that is more intentional about identifying and instilling student leadership across the Middle School.”
