Spring Field Trips

Each Middle School class went on a spring field trip last week. These are exciting trips where students bonded with each other and their teachers.
The Fifth Grade visited Hershey Park in Hershey, PA on Friday, May 15. The class enjoyed rides like The Comet and Farenheit, had lunch in the park, and then visited Hershey’s Chocolate World to take the Great American Chocolate Tour ride at the end of the trip. It was a day of fun and chocolate for all!

Sixth Grade students have been partnering with the residents of Blakehurst Retirement Community as they piloted a new Design Thinking community outreach program. Students met with residents on several occasions to help develop solutions to challenges that they face. On Friday, Sixth grade students spent the morning improving their prototypes by redefining and redesigning based on the feedback from a panel. Then a celebratory outdoor lunch with residents was generously hosted by Blakehurst. After lunch, the students presented their prototypes to Blakehurst residents. Residents and advisors alike were impressed with the projects that showcased students’ creativity, innovation, and problem-solving abilities! To thank the Sixth Grade for all their hard work and effort, they will attend a future Orioles game.

Seventh Grade traveled to Philadelphia on Thursday and Friday. They visited the Franklin Institute where they saw an IMAX and toured Independence Mall, which includes the Liberty Bell, Congress Hall, Carpenter’s Hall, Independence Hall, and the National Constitution Center. Thursday evening, students enjoyed a ghost tour of the historic city. Friday included more sightseeing at Betsy Ross House, Christ Church, Elfreth’s Alley, Dr. Rush’s House, Washington Square, and Declaration House. Seeing and experiencing these locations helped reinforce many of the topics studied during the year. Since the boys and girls learned about our founding fathers and the creation of our government, visiting the places where it all began further reinforces the importance of the events.

Eighth Grade took an exciting three-day trip to Washington, D.C. and Harper’s Ferry. The first stop in D.C. was the Newseum followed by various Smithsonian museums. On Wednesday night, students enjoyed dinner at RFK Stadium where they took in a DC United game. On Thursday, everyone headed to Harper’s Ferry, WV where they spent the afternoon rafting. On Friday, each student was given a letter from their parents, which they read in beautiful scenery during a hike. This was an opportunity for parents to express their love and support for their children and let them know how proud they are of them. It proves to be a very moving experience, coming at a time when the students are particularly reflective and sentimental about all the good things they have shared together as a class.

The trips were a huge success with many smiles, laughs, and memories made.
