Alumni in Education: Kelly McCormick Whitman '00

Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, we will spotlight alumni with careers in education. For many of these alumni, the path to becoming an educator began at Calvert School with inspiration coming from their teachers along the way.

This month we spotlight Calvert's Dean of Upper Elementary Kelly McCormick Whitman '00.

Favorite Calvert Memory
The beginning of 7th Age with Mrs. Byrnes. It was the first time we all had our own desks and lockers. I remember feeling really excited for school and for my new desk! It made me feel so responsible.

Why did you want to become a teacher?
I enjoy working with children. Children are curious and thoughtful. It is exciting to watch students grow academically and socially over the course of the school year and from one year to the next. I hope to be a positive and caring role model in my students’ lives.

What brought you back to Calvert?
While getting my degree in education, I always thought back to my experience at Calvert. Calvert is a place where students are encouraged to think critically and to work hard, but to also respect and take care of others. The Calvert Pillars of respect, compassion, responsibility and honor are upheld daily. The sense of community is such an important piece of Calvert and is one of the main reasons I wanted to return to Calvert to teach.
