Calvert School believes that community service is an integral part of the educational experience. The program is committed to providing meaningful experiences for students, faculty, their families and the greater Calvert Community. These experiences will provide a range of opportunities to build the Calvert community through both outreach and inreach. By the time our Calvert students graduate, it is our hope that each student will have a basic understanding of the community in which they live, gain problem solving and critical thinking skills to bring about change, and gain appreciation of their ability to impact the world around them in positive ways.
Projects will range from hands on activities such as plantings and stream clean ups to writing letters to troops and home bound elderly. Projects will be done in a variety of settings and will be tailored to the age group participating. Not only will students engage in classroom-based activities, they will also have the opportunity to be part of school wide projects. Several times throughout the year, Calvert will host optional family service days on the weekend, in which families work side by side other members of the Calvert community in service projects on and off campus.
Calvert will support organizations providing basic emergency services, working to improve the local environment, providing needed medical care, supporting seniors and our military (see partner list on website). Calvert will attempt to integrate these experiences with reflection and learning as appropriate. We hope to have a measurable impact on students' experiences and the organizations with whom they interact.
