Physical Education provides all children, beginning in Pilot Class, with multiple opportunities for physical, mental, emotional, and social growth through active games and structured play. Children learn skills at an age-appropriate pace and gain knowledge about their own physical development. The focus is on developing an appreciation for physical activity that will lead to lifetime health and wellness. Experiences in team and individual sports, as well as movement and rhythms, are designed to help students gain skills and develop positive attitudes toward exercise, sport, and their physical abilities. Lower School classes meet four to five times per week for 30-45 minutes depending on the age level.
In the Middle School, children learn cooperation and teamwork to use on the athletic fields and in the classroom. Physical Education is taught during the day, meets two to three times per week, and is closely aligned to the optional intramural and interscholastic sports offered after school. We offer thirteen interscholastic sports; through team sports, Calvert seeks to inspire a lifelong interest in healthy living, develop an enthusiasm for working together to accomplish an objective, and encourage self-discipline and responsibility. On average, over 90 percent of our students participate in at least one interscholastic sport.
