Special Gift Efforts

Each year special fundraising gift efforts are initiated by groups or individuals who wish to honor a special Calvert milestone, event, or memory.

The Class of 2012 Butterfly Garden
The parents and grandparents of the Eighth Grade Class of 2012 have chosen a special project to
honor their child’s/grandchild’s graduation from Calvert School.

Since 1924, Calvert School has resided on Tuscany Road in the beautiful neighborhood of Roland Park. As the School has grown, however, there has been a continuing desire to beautify the campus. Funds raised by the parents and grandparents of the Class of 2012 will be put toward The Class of 2012 Butterfly Garden, located along the walkway between the Lower and Middle School buildings. Wolfgang Oehme, a world renowned landscape architect who designed the plan for the Mary W. “Molly” Harris ’13 Memorial Garden, has developed a magnificent design for the garden which will bloom with seasonal interest throughout the year. Additionally, the garden will aim to attract various species of butterflies, birds, and other natural visitors.
Butterflies are a beautiful species and one of nature’s most important plant pollinators. Their caterpillars are essential as well, because most are a vital food source for birds and other animals. The Class of 2012 Butterfly Garden has been designed with primarily native plants, which will serve as a food source for butterflies. By providing a habitat for butterflies to lay eggs, and host plants which insect larvae will eat, the garden will support several forms of life while ensuring the survival of native butterfly species, therefore creating a healthy ecosystem at Calvert School.
It is vital to connect our children with the complexities, wonder, and beauty of the natural world. This environmentally sensitive, sustainable garden space will enrich the students’ academic foundation, reinforce topics learned in the classroom, and encourage hands on learning as students’ explore the gardens. Once in full bloom, placards containing both the Latin and common names of plants, shrubs, and wildlife will be placed in the garden, further enhancing the space as a learning tool for our students.
Construction has already begun on the garden project and, in fact, it is almost complete. It was essential for the plants, shrubs, and flowers to be planted during the summer months so that they have time to root during the winter and fully bloom in the spring and early summer. This is perfect timing so that students can take full advantage of the garden during the warmer months of the school year, and of course, be ready for our children’s Eighth Grade graduation in June!
