Bees for BARCS 2016

The Calvert Mighty Bees were out in full force on a frigid Saturday morning in Patterson Park.
Over 120 community members including students, teachers, parents, and friends ran, walked, and cheered enthusiastically to support BARCStoberfest, an annual fundraiser for the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). Bees for BARCS, a student-led initiative spearheaded by our 8th Grade leaders, proved to be a resounding success.

Eighth Grader Cynthia Somers noted "It was so fulfilling to see so many members of the Calvert community come together, and to see our vision come to reality."

"Seeing everyone out there was so awesome, and we even exceeded our fundraising goal of $2,500 to reach $4,200! Plus, we raised awareness for a great cause and healthy living" said 8th Grader Emily Briggs.

The greatest scene of the day was the start of the race, when a sea of royal blue Bees for BARCS t-shirts dominated the field. In fact, we swept the female top spots in the 5K race with Kait Gentry winning, followed by Kim Daly, and Carolyn Parker. Nice job, ladies! Plus, Middle School students Pieter Heesters and Alexis Ballo earned the top two spots for male youth. Not to be forgotten, Mr. Holmgren completed his first 5k as well, nice work Mr. H!
