“Hairspray,” the classic ode to 1960s Baltimore by John Waters ‘58, will officially take its place in history. The 1988 film was a 2022 selection for the National Film Registry. Housed by the Library of Congress, the National Film Registry recognizes and preserves films that are considered to be “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” As you sing along to “Good Morning, Baltimore,” visit the The Baltimore Sun’s website to read more about this honor and the 24 other films chosen in 2022.

A family discovered two diaries which shed light on a period of the father’s life rarely discussed. What came next was an eight year journey that included hundreds of hours of transcription, research, and a new book by Betsy Baetjer ‘66 called Point Me to the Skies: A World War II American Fighter Pilot’s Story. “I’ve always loved family histories,” Betsy said. “The true and the coincidental are cool.”

The Calvert Alumni Board is proud to present a new Book Club beginning this fall. The first selection is the award-winning Model Home written by alumnus Eric Puchner '82. The Mighty Bees had a full slate of community engagement initiatives this fall. A group of 12 Eighth Grade Community Action Captains facilitated and led discussions of social action and worked with community partners to create positive social change. These student leaders planned three successful community-wide initiatives this fall: Bees for BARCS, Bikes for the World, and a Thanksgiving Drive.

John Webster ‘82 knows a thing or two about lacrosse. An All-American during his time at Boys’ Latin, he went on to earn All-ACC and All-American honors at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he helped the Tar Heels win four ACC championships and the 1991 National Championship. This winter, John brings his expertise to campus for the Calvert Middle School Girls Winter Indoor Lacrosse League (CWILL) providing detailed instruction focused on player improvement.

A new exhibit at the Baltimore Museum of Art features 90 pieces from the personal collection of John Waters ‘58. “Coming Attractions: The John Waters Collection” includes creative and eclectic artwork that is part of a much larger collection which John is bequeathing to the Museum. This exhibit, open through April 16, 2023, showcases works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, and Diane Arbus among others. A photograph by Peter Hujar called “Looking at Trash” is just one of the items on display. “This pile of garbage hangs in my living room, the most formal room in my house,” Waters said. “Trash can be beautiful. It can be elegant. That’s what this photograph is.”

Hard work, fair play, and warm friendship. First Head Master Virgil Hillyer wrote these phrases to describe the student experience at Calvert, but he just as easily could have been describing Julia Dorsey ‘15. A multi-sport athlete for most of life, Julia is familiar with the dedication it takes to achieve success at a high level. After receiving all-metro honors at McDonogh School, Julia now plays soccer and lacrosse collegiately at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Faculty, staff, and administrators visited the Baltimore Museum of Art on November 17 to view a moving exhibit called “A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration.” The exhibit explores the ways in which The Great Migration continues to impact our society today. It includes newly commissioned multi-media works by twelve acclaimed Black artists. The collection’s emphasis on Movement provides a diverse perspective about the legacies of the Great Migration.

Alumni from the Classes of 2019 to 2022 returned to Calvert on Sunday, November 20. Always a highly anticipated event, this year was a Baltimore Ravens watch party. Dressed in their purple and black, alumni cheered the team to victory while also catching up with classmates and visiting Middle School classrooms. The highlight for many was the opportunity to reconnect with Calvert teachers. Head Master Andrew Holmgren and Middle School Head Matt Buck ‘87 welcomed the graduates back to campus. Middle School math teacher Skip Howe ‘77 and Upper School Placement Coordinator Kathy Cole Liotta ‘79 also stopped by to visit with their former students.

Calvert School welcomed Jean Harvey Baker '45 to campus on Wednesday, November 9th, to speak to Justin Short's Eighth Grade History Class. Dr. Baker is a distinguished American Historian and professor emerita at Goucher College, where she was the Bennett-Hartwood Professor of History. Dr. Baker is also a renowned writer of historical biographies and was a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow in 1982. She is the author of many nineteenth-century American history books.

The St. Paul's Schools and Calvert School hosted a joint alumni event on the St. Paul's campus earlier this month: An Evening with Pierre S. Dupont. In a discussion moderated by Calvert and St. Paul’s alumnus Rick Williams (Calvert Class of 1955), Pierre shared his family's philanthropic initiatives and the lessons learned for creating a family-wide giving strategy. Calvert alumnus and President of The St. Paul's Schools Clark Wight '81 shared opening remarks and welcomed Rick, Pierre, Calvert Head Master Andrew Holmgren, St. Paul's School for Boys Head Dr. Ed Trusty, and alumni from both schools.

The Calvert community donned their finest black and gold on October 7, 2022, for a day of celebrations honoring the School’s 125th anniversary and the official opening of the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center. Calvert families, alumni, trustees, and employees came together to mark this special moment in the School’s history.

Josie George Worthington '72 took the trip of a lifetime this October when she traveled to South Africa to compete in the Field Hockey Masters World Cup as part of Team U.S.A.'s O-60 squad. This 10-day tournament brought together teams from 20 countries and was Josie's second international competition. In 2019, she helped Team U.S.A. win the European Trophy in Belgium.

Reunion Weekend 2023 will take place May 12 and 13, and this year we celebrate classes ending in “3” and “8.” Each month, we will share a sampling of the interesting careers and hobbies pursued by alumni in reunion years. This month, we highlight Dr. Liz Harvey ‘58, Tod Campbell ‘73, and Kendall Steer ‘18 who will celebrate their 65th, 50th, and 5th reunions respectively.

Top supporters of the Calvert 125 Campaign gathered in the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center on October 7, 2022, to celebrate the building’s official opening and dedicate the new facility in honor of Susie and Jack Luetkemeyer ‘53 and the entire Luetkemeyer family.

The Class of 2023 gathered for High School Night on October 6. This annual event brings representatives from dozens of day and boarding schools to Calvert to meet the Eighth Grade students and share information about their schools. Close to 50 alumni returned to campus to represent their high schools and visit with Calvert friends and teachers. While on campus, many alumni toured the new Luetkemeyer Athletic Center for the first time. This event is an important step in the high school search process as it provides Eighth Grade students with opportunities to learn more about the individual schools and hear directly from alumni who recently made their own high school decisions.

Beatrice Matkovic Mowry ‘73 truly embodies the Calvert tenants of lifelong curiosity and learning. An internship with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum launched a 40 year career in which Beatrice combines her interest in space with her passion for art. “I was able to marry my two interests in a great way, and I just love it. I really think I have the best job,” she shared.

Alastair Cho '15 won the gold medal in squash at the Korean National Sports Festival, where he represented the United States as part of the Korean American delegation. Team U.S.A. had an opportunity to meet South Korean President Yoon Seok-Yul.

Congratulations to Chris Adams ‘99 and Blake Sheehan ‘00 who were named to the Baltimore Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” list for 2022. Selected from more than 270 nominees, Blake, Chris, and their fellow honorees demonstrate a commitment to their companies as well as the greater Baltimore region. A celebration will be held on November 17 at the Marriott Owings Mills Metro Center.

A moment years in the making, the only sound was the echo of footsteps as Alastair Cho ‘15 stepped onto the squash court for the first time. Alastair competes on some of the most significant stages in the sport as a member of the Princeton University squash team and nationally ranked high school player at McDonogh School. This time, the stage was Hopkins Court in Calvert’s new Luetkemeyer Athletic Center.

These reflections start with my mother, Helen Martien, who was born in Cleveland and grew up in Atlanta. Upon coming to Baltimore, she asked her new Baltimore friends and neighbors three questions: (1) who was the finest pediatrician in Baltimore; (2) who was the finest dentist in Baltimore; and (3) what was the best elementary school in Baltimore? So, my older brother, Bill Martien ’76 and I saw Dr. Larrie Blue at Valley Pediatrics Associates, saw Dr. Charles Gossard in Ruxton, and attended Calvert School.

Calvert’s 10 squash courts and field house in the newly-constructed Luetkemeyer Athletic Center will open to our students at the start of the school year. To celebrate our newest facility and the School’s 125^th year, we will host a Founders’ Day Festival on Friday, October 7. The afternoon will include scheduled athletic events against Boys’ Latin, Garrison Forest, and St. Paul’s, obstacle courses, and carnival games for all ages. In addition, Patrick Bedore, Calvert’s new squash pro, will organize a small bracket challenge for alumni, parents, and friends. New Calvert graduates stand on the stage every June looking out at their proud families and teachers. Crisp certificates in hand and gold CS pins shining, they proudly (and perhaps with a few tears) sing the song, "We're going far from Calvert." The graduates process down the aisle and on to their next adventures. Their stories are unique and varied, with a common thread being Calvert School. As we enter Calvert’s 125th school year, 16 alumni will write new chapters from their classrooms and offices at Calvert.

Calvert and St. Paul’s alumnus Rick Williams (Calvert Class of 1955) will moderate a discussion on generational philanthropic planning with Pierre duPont of Cerity Partners. Anna McAllister ‘18 is an adventurer at heart. That was on full display as she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to cap off a month-long stay in Tanzania this summer. Anna’s five-day climb began in the rainforest and occurred mainly above the clouds. Anna and the group woke at midnight on her final day to start their journey to the summit. “It was harder mentally than physically,” shared Anna.

Congratulations to Bessie Cromwell Speers ‘76 who will become the next Head of School at Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts beginning in July 2023. Bessie currently serves as Head of School at Tower Hill School, where she will conclude eight years of visionary leadership next June.

Members of the Class of 2018 gathered in the Lower School to reminisce and catch up. As this impressive class celebrates their tremendous high school success, they also prepare to begin a new chapter in the fall. We sent them off with a walk down memory lane and a little piece of Calvert to take with them - a desk set for their dorm rooms! Best of luck, Calvert Class of 2018!

We are thrilled to welcome Josie George Worthington '72 to Calvert as the Leadership Gifts Officer. Following her Calvert graduation, Josie attended Garrison Forest School and Wheaton College. Josie served on Calvert's Board of Trustees from 1998 to 2007, during which she was integral to the opening of the Middle School.

The Epoch Times highlighted the work of Dr. Beau Ances ‘84 in the article “Sleep ‘Sweet Spot’ May Mean Less Cognitive Decline.” The article shines a light on his research into the relationships among sleep, Alzheimer’s disease, and cognitive health.

Writers, bankers, analysts, artists, and more! Calvert alumni do it all. Last week, Director of Development Sarah Walton, Marketing & Communications Manager Sam Shelton, and Director of Alumni Relations & Stewardship Katie Wareheim '98 joined an impressive group of New York-area alumni at Monarch Rooftop for an evening of cocktails, conversation, and sharing Calvert memories.

Rick Buck ‘60, along with son Matt ‘87 and daughter Maggie Buck Holland ‘89, took to the Canadian waters this summer for a family canoe trip. The group spent four days exploring a provincial park known for its quartzite mountains and crystal clear waters near the north end of Lake Huron.

Betsey Hobelmann ’87 (singer), Matt Wyskiel ’81 (bass guitar), Todd Hobelmann (guitar), Toby Bozzuto (keyboards), and Dr. Jim Higgins (drums) formed the band, Midlife Crisis, and recently performed at Elkridge pool. Midlife Crisis mostly plays popular classic and newer rock songs.

Carina Beritela '18 returned to Calvert earlier this month to speak at the Class of 2022 graduation on Castalia Lawn. Carina encouraged her fellow alumni to "play [their] part and inspire someone."

"That is my charge to you, Class of 2022," she said. "With the kindness and compassion you show to yourself and others, inspire someone."

Carina recently graduated from the Lawrenceville School and will attend Johns Hopkins University this fall. She was awarded the Hodson Trust Scholarship, the most prestigious four-year merit-based scholarship at the university.

After graduating from Calvert School, Katie Wareheim '98 went on to attend the Bryn Mawr School and completed her undergraduate work at Elon University, where she earned a degree in Communications, Corporate Communications, and Business Administration. Katie returned to Calvert in 2008 and worked nine years in the Admission Office, beginning as the Admission Coordinator before being promoted to the Assistant Director of Admission. In 2017, Katie went on to St. James Academy in Monkton, where she spent the last five years as Director of Admission & Enrollment Management. She is eager to return to Calvert once again as the Director of Alumni Relations and Stewardship. Katie and her family enjoy a deep legacy at Calvert, including her brother, Matthew ’01, and her father, Paul Wareheim, who recently retired after 39 years in various teaching and administrative roles. Sarah shared with her friend and former classmate Tracy Lankford ’81, “Butterfly Sisters is a book that I wrote back in 2010; my girls illustrated it, and we gave it to family as Christmas gifts. I have shared it with some friends, and there were some mumblings about me trying to publish it. Of course, it got put on a shelf and life went on. Once the pandemic hit and I had time to think about what I wanted to do, publishing a book was at the top of the list. A mutual friend hooked me up with an artist, Maggie Willis, who magically brought this story to life. This story honors my two girls and their special sisterhood. It is the story of inclusion, acceptance, family, and love."

The Class of 2022 will be heading off to 17 different schools next year, a testament to the diversity of talents and interests among these young men and women. This group of students also boasts an impressive 50 merit-based awards, which is an extraordinary accomplishment. We are pleased to share that students will be attending the following schools:

For the first time since 2019, Calvert welcomed back approximately 200 alumni for a series of in-person reunion events on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7.

The results are in, and the final showdown in our reunion giving challenge will be between none other than 1971 ($24,355 and 23% participation) v. 1952 ($61,275 and 46% participation).

Sally Hopkins Jacobs ’69 made a virtual return to campus on April 27th to speak via Zoom with the Middle School Diversity, Outreach, and Allies Clubs. A veteran Boston journalist, Sally is finishing her second book Althea, a biography of tennis champion Althea Gibson and the moment she broke the color barrier in 1950, due to be released in 2023. 

In recognition of the Calvert 125 campaign’s success, more than 150 Calvert alumni, donors, administrators, and community members gathered at the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) on Wednesday, April 20, to reflect on the School’s historic achievements and launch a full year of anniversary events.

As Calvert’s eighth-grade students raised $11,000 through the Cool Schools Plunge for the Special Olympics Maryland, many recent graduates continued the tradition at their respective high schools.
