Frank Deford '51

Sportswriter and Novelist
Frank Deford captured a broad audience as one of the most versatile American writers of his time. From 1962 until his death in 2017, Deford wrote for several magazines, but the majority of his time was spent with Sports Illustrated magazine. Deford attended Princeton University and after graduation, he began his career as a researcher. Deford was a commentator on CNN and was a correspondent for HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. In addition to his sports journalism, he was a regular commentator on NPR's Morning Edition. While most of his writing fell outside of the sports realm. Deford wrote 18 books, nine of which were novels. 

Frank's brothers, Gill '60 and Mac '54, fondly remember Frank showing an early interest in writing. In his Twelfth Age at Calvert, Frank started a weekly newspaper of one-to-two typed pages.
