Calvert Community Collects Art and School Supplies for Puerto Rico

On Friday, April 6th, our Eighth Age and Fifth Grade students came together for a morning of service after a week-long drive. Together they discussed the purpose of efforts to partner with Bags of Love, packed over 400 art supply kits, and created notes of kindness to accompany our shipment of donations to Puerto Rico.
Last fall when Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, our students immediately took action. Through two drives and one fundraiser, and in collaboration with Bags of Love, they positively impacted people in Puerto Rico by collecting and sending daily necessities. Students recognized that long-term help is needed, and this semester their aim was to support the children of Puerto Rico in a different way. The entire Calvert community, Lower School and Middle School, took part in a School & Art Supplies Spring Drive. The drive consisted of collecting school and art supplies, writing a note with words of kindness and hope, and putting together personal “bags of love” to send to children in Puerto Rico. Each grade was assigned specific items to ensure equal distributions. From crayons to watercolor kits, from marker sets to Model Magic clay, each of these small donations will go to a child in Puerto Rico still recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this a success. Our efforts not only built a sense of empathy in our children but will also put smiles on the faces of children in the Caribbean.
