Calvert Students Complete 40-Mile Hike

Each April, Boy Scout Troop 35 hosts a 40-mile hike which is open to participants of all ages and athletic ability. This year the hike took place on April 21st along the NPR trail, beginning in Sparks, MD and ending in York, PA. Five Calvert students completed all 40 miles; Sixth Grader Clara D. was the first girl to finish with a time of 8 hours and 54 minutes.
This is the fourth year in a row that Clara is the first girl to finish the hike. Fifty U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen took part in the race this year, and Clara was accompanied throughout much of the race by a midshipman. Clara’s sister, Ninth Ager Julianne D. completed the hike in 9 hours and 46 minutes, and her brother, Sixth Ager Davis D. completed the hike in 10 hours and 35 minutes. He was the youngest male finisher. Other Calvert finishers include Seventh Ager Virginia B. and Fifth Grader Michael E.

The 40-mile hike was inspired by President John F. Kennedy, who challenged the nation’s youth to become more physically fit. The Troop Scoutmaster at that time established the inaugural hike in 1964. We are very proud of Clara, Julianne, Davis, Virginia, and Michael for completing what many would not be able to finish. Congratulations!
