Alumni & Reunion Weekend 2018

Alumni & Reunion Weekend 2018 welcomed back nearly 100 alumni. The festivities began with the Alumni Luncheon for the Classes of 1933-1968, as well as Signature Society and Hillyer Society members. The Middle School String Ensemble, guided by Mr. John Babcock, performed as guests arrived for the luncheon. Trustee Colston Young ’85 welcomed guests and introduced the Eighth Grade Speaker Caroline R., who presented her Castalia project on Netflix. Head Master Andrew Holmgren also presented a brief State of the School for luncheon guests.
Courtenay Compton McGowen ’58, who traveled from Southern California to celebrate her 60th Reunion, joined us for the luncheon, as did Corbin Marr ’55, who traveled from Washington, D.C. to share his beloved school with his son, Carson. We also welcomed back the following alumni: Mac Passano ’55, Peter Schweizer ’58, Charlie Albert ’72, Julie Buchannan Salovaara ’77, Kate Tubman Cameron ’78, Muffy Menton Fenwick ’87, Betsey Swingle Hobelmann ’87, Rachel Arnot Rockwell ’91, and Dorothea Lankford, as well as two former faculty members, Ann Dahl and Robin Buck Nicolls ’55. After the luncheon, Robin Buck Nicolls ’55 and Courtenay Compton McGowen ’58 took a tour of the Lower School, and Corbin Marr ’55 showed his son the Class of 1955 signature plaque.

On Saturday evening, the Alumni Cocktail Party took place in the France-Merrick Atrium in the Middle School, followed by the Reunion Dinner Party in 2 Oak Place. Alumni heard from Andrew Holmgren and viewed a special video message from Terry Lacy ’38, who was unable to make the trip from Iceland to Baltimore for her 80th Reunion. Andrew Holmgren and Clemmie Miller ’81 thanked Rachel Arnot Rockwell ’91 for her time on the Alumni Board and for her leadership and commitment over the past two years as President of the Alumni Association. To honor her service, Rachel was given a watercolor painting of the Lower School. During her remarks, Clemmie said, “Rachel has been an instrumental part of our alumni program. She has served on the Alumni Board since 2010, and she took over as Alumni President in 2016. Under her leadership, the Alumni Board expanded both the local and regional events schedule and outreach, increased the number of alumni board members who live outside of Baltimore, and oversaw a strategic planning session last summer to put measurable objectives to the Board’s overarching goals.”

The Reunion Dinner for classes ending in ‘3’ and ‘8’ immediately followed the cocktail party. Alumni Board members Clemmie Miller ’81 and Catherine Thomas Burdette ’81 celebrated with Jenks Cromwell ’43, Courtenay Compton McGowen ’58, Bert Keidel ’58, Peter Schweizer ’58, Brian and Ann Hammond Brooke ’68, Susan Wells Thompson ’68 (who joined us from New Jersey!), Alan and Edee Finney Waller ’68, Susanna Brennan '78 and Virginia Ryker ’78. While Bert Keidel ’58 was on campus celebrating his 60th Reunion, he posed for a photo next to a bronze Native American sculpture, The Seneca-Mowhawk Lacrosse Game of 1797 by Jud Hartman which his late sister Anne Keidel ’56 donated to Calvert through her estate.

Photos from the weekend can be found here. Members of classes ending in ‘4’ and ‘9’, please let Carly Slagel know if you have reunion ideas for your Spring 2019 celebration.
