BGE Green Grant Extended for 2018-2019 School Year

BGE continues its support of the greening of Calvert School with an additional gift of $5,000 to jumpstart a new Sustainability Club. This gift is an extension of last year’s effort to create a community garden and compost program.
Last year, a team of Seventh Grade students spearheaded the evolution of the Calvert School Community Garden, and an accompanying composting program. These students worked diligently throughout the year leading assemblies, organizing community events such as Art Saturdays, and hauling compost to see their successful plan through. Their efforts were supported by a generous Green Grant from Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE), who enthusiastically awarded the funds after reading a grant written by these students.

In just the past few weeks, BGE has pledged to continue to support the greening of Calvert School with a kind gift of $5,000 to kick off our new Middle School Students for Sustainability Club. This student-led initiative, spearheaded by rising Seventh Graders Ava W., Channing L, and Elisabeth S., will bring students interested in environmental stewardship together on a weekly basis. Building off last year’s success, Students for Sustainability will continue efforts to green our lunch program and support the Community Garden. This group will also take over the planning of Earth Week, organize increased environmental outreach days for the school community, and host a 2019 Environmental Leadership Summit for area middle schools.
