Calvert Eighth Graders Open with Inaugural Leadership Launch

On Thursday, August 30 Calvert School hosted its first-ever Leadership Launch for Eighth Grade students and their families. The goal of this day was to welcome our oldest students back to campus with a charge to serve as leaders, mentors, and role models for younger students.
After an introductory session led by Middle School Head Matt Buck and Eighth Grade Dean of Students Neal McMahon, the students participated in a full-day of activities and sessions oriented around community leadership. This included 90 minutes of group dynamics games promoting teamwork and communication, and a passionate presentation from Mrs. Lears inspiring each student to view him or herself as a leader. As Mrs. Lears noted, she has witnessed her own children and Calvert students over the years evolve into confident, motivated citizens. “I believe in all of you to be your best self,” she stated.

The day culminated with an introduction to the new Hives advisory program; a co-ed, cross-grade approach to student activities and school life. Within each Hive, four Eighth Graders will serve as Hive leaders, setting the tone for the Middle School and mentoring younger students. Hives, co-facilitated by Middle School French Teacher Joseph Ali and Sixth Grade Dean of Students Angel Menefee, is an intentional, structured approach to building stronger relationships in our school.

Please join us in congratulating our oldest students for setting aside a day to lead with purpose for Calvert School!
