A Successful Fall Food Drive

Anne McGraw
Calvert School families and students donated over $8,000 of food during our first drive of the year! Most donations have already been delivered by parent volunteers to the Baltimore Hunger Project (BHP), but there is also a great need for weekend packs. These packs contain non-perishable foods and are given to children from our city and county so they may have something to eat on Saturdays and Sundays when school meals are not available. We are grateful to partner with the Baltimore Hunger Project, an organization that each week delivers weekend food packs to over five hundred students.
Sixth Graders and Eighth Agers partnered on Friday, October 19 to assemble weekend packs and to make notes of kindness for the recipients of our donations. Service Learning at Calvert aims to make our drives and community efforts more impactful for our students by involving them in all aspects of the activities we sponsor. Students collected the food, packed the food, transported the food, and also took time to discuss why their efforts are so important. Reflection discussions helped our students, especially our younger ones, understand the importance of contributing to our community and putting themselves in someone else’s shoes.

Our next two drives will be a collection of infant items for ShareBaby at our annual Family Bingo Night on Nov. 16, and a schoolwide Toy Drive for Paul’s Place and Hampden Family Center in December.
