Winter Sports Buzz 2019
Calvert’s winter sports season is in full swing! With a record number of middle school students participating in basketball, ice hockey, and squash every afternoon is bustling with activity.
Here is a quick look at the season so far:
- Sixth Grade Girls’ Basketball, in its inaugural season, is off to a great start under the direction of coaches Kim Daly and Josh Betustak. Many girls who have never played before are quickly learning the basics and improving with each game.
- Sixth Grade Boys’ Basketball is also off and running, headed by coaches Timika Tyson and Jibri McLean. With games against local opponents Boys’ Latin, Concordia Prep, and Friends School of Baltimore already in the books, the Sixth Grade team is working hard and having fun.
- Girls’ B Basketball is off to a strong start as well with solid games against Garrison Forest and Friends School prior to the holiday break. Coaches Jason Till and Kristen Handy will have their crew in mid-season form as they roll through January with games against St. James, McDonogh, and Park School.
- Boys’ B Basketball has battled close games against McDonogh and Baltimore Collegiate so far. Coaches Ben Pittman and Josh Angulo-Bartlett have become masters of maximizing effort from all eight boys each practice and game. Their schedule continues with matchups against Cathedral, Waldorf, and St. Ignatius on the horizon!
- Girls’ A Basketball, under the veteran leadership of coaches Brian Mascuch and Craig Bennett, are off to an excellent start, posting victories at Friends School and Garrison Forest before the holiday break. As they push towards the conference playoffs, they’ll take on St. James, Cambridge, and Harford Day School.
- Boys’ A Basketball, under new coaches Eric Cowell and Joe Ali, have kicked off the season with wins over local rivals St. Paul’s and McDonogh before the holiday break. With the bulk of their conference schedule ahead, they’ll be tested by St. James, Cathedral, and St. Ignatius before the conference tournament in early February.
- Ice Hockey, under first-year head coach Andrew Slade, is sitting at the .500 mark with an opening victory over Boys’ Latin and a heartbreaking loss to Upland Country School. With a record 24 skaters this season, Calvert’s “coolest” sport will be tested by teams like Boys’ Latin, Upland Country, and cross town rival, St. Paul’s this season.
- B Squash-Black and B Squash-Gold are also off to strong starts this season thanks to fantastic efforts by their top five players. Those early morning practices are beginning to pay dividends against some really skilled teams from McDonogh, St. Paul’s, Loyola Blakefield, and Boys’ Latin.
- A Squash, the defending Division III National Champion, has battled against teams like St. Paul’s, McDonogh, Gilman, and Roland Park Country School under the watchful eye of Coaches Lears and Silberstein. As they prepare to defend their crown at Yale in late January, they’ll be tested by strong local competition the rest of the way.
