Cool Schools Plunge 2019: A Splashing Success

Calvert School and St. Elizabeth School team sends 150 Plungers into the Chesapeake Bay!
Calvert’s third annual participation in the Cool Schools Plunge was again a splashing success! On January 24, after months of preparation and fundraising for the Special Olympics, we arrived at Sandy Point State Park for the big day. Over 150 students and teachers from the two schools took the plunge, in pouring rain and frigid water.

Our Seventh Grade Council spearheaded the new partnership with St. Elizabeth School, which brought together 16 buddy teams of students from the two schools. “It was so much fun and so meaningful to work with our friends at St. Elizabeth," says Seventh Grader Le’la G. “My buddy is Kaitlyn. She and I could not stop smiling at the plunge despite the freezing cold. We can’t wait until next year!”

The inspiration throughout this initiative was Team Sutton and the Clark Family. Oliver and his sister Sutton proved to be one of the top teams in the Polar Bear Plunge yet again. “I want to thank everyone who donated and helped again this year.” Oliver stated “I can’t believe how much this continues to grow!”

The Cool Schools Plunge supports the Special Olympics Maryland, and Team Calvert & St. Elizabeth showed its strength by raising almost $15,000 for this great cause. This nearly doubled our previous record of $7,000 and we were once again the highest fundraising independent school in Maryland. Great job Mighty Bees and Eagles!

We also wanted to especially thank Ms. Erin Upton, Principal of St. Elizabeth School who has eagerly supported this new initiative with her enthusiasm and outstanding commitment.

Keep up the great work Oliver, Sutton, St. Elizabeth School, and Calvert's Seventh and Eighth Grade! You are all great examples of student leadership.
