Sustainability and Rainforests Celebrated during Earth Week 2019
From April 15-18, 2019 Calvert celebrated Earth Week in honor of Earth Day, which is observed annually on April 22. This year Earth Week blended the traditional Middle School theme days, such as “Lights Off Wednesday” and “Get Outside Friday”, with a focus on a specific biome of the world: the tropical rainforest.
The Lower School admissions lobby, as well as the Middle School Atrium, were decorated as rainforests to inspire students to ask questions and learn more about the Amazon, and other tropical rainforests around the world. Biodiversity, the canopies, symbiosis, and deforestation were themes that students learned about throughout the week. During the week, Lower School students had a chance to learn from Sixth Graders, who prepared and taught their own lessons specifically for Earth Week.
Another focus of the week was on sustainability, and more specifically, food waste. The Middle School heard from Mr. Dave Alexander, a representative from the Meatless Mondays campaign at Johns Hopkins University. This kicked off another week-long S.L.O.P. competition, hoping to reduce our food waste through conscious decisions about the food we take at lunch. The Lower School students joined in for a one-day S.L.O.P. competition of their own! Earth Week 2019 was a great success and we are looking forward to continuing these themes of sustainability throughout the school year.
