Building Bridges in Our Community at the Spring 2019 Middle Grades Partnership (MGP) Leadership Summit
This past weekend, The Institute for Leadership & Purpose at Calvert School hosted students from 16 Baltimore public and independent schools for the Spring 2019 Middle Grades Partnership (MGP) Leadership Summit. This event was the culmination of the first year of a School Year Leadership Program in partnership with MGP, a dynamic non-profit that builds bridges across our city and inspires growth in middle school students. Since 2005 MGP has supported thousands of middle school students to achieve academic and personal growth on their journey to high school and college.
The Institute/MGP School Year Leadership Program kicked off last November with a full-day leadership summit featuring civic leaders from across Baltimore, and workshops facilitated by fourteen Calvert faculty members. Throughout the winter, each of the nine MGP partnerships met with guest speakers to explore and identify focus areas for social action projects to launch next Fall. Topics that emerged include Baltimore Ceasefire (RPCS/Lillie May), Teen Depression (McDonogh/Mt. Royal), and Autism Awareness (Calvert/Hamilton).
On Saturday, April 27th, our schools came together to celebrate a successful year of collaborative learning. Hosted again at Calvert School, and facilitated by our faculty, featured speakers included Dr. Sonja Santelises (Baltimore City Schools, CEO), Alicia Wilson (Vice President, Port Covington Corporation), and Destini Philpot and Shayla Williams (Baltimore Ceasefire Youth Ambassadors). The day also featured the introduction of our mentoring program with the student-athletes from Towson University, a partnership that will grow next year. Special thanks to Calvert parent Mr. Antwaine Smith, Associate Athletic Director at Towson University, for creating this element of our program.
We are incredibly proud of the Calvert community for supporting this endeavor to promote leadership not just in our school, but to our neighboring schools. This is part of Public Purpose to inspire the best in all young people in our city. Thank you to the team from Middle Grades Partnership for granting us this meaningful opportunity.
