Calvert School Hosts Record-Breaking Alumni Reunion
Calvert School’s 2019 Alumni Reunion brought a record-breaking nearly 140 alumni and friends back to campus for a cocktail reception in the W. P. Carey Lower School Building. Guests arrived to the musical talents of current Calvert students, Wes Seba ’19, Le’la Greene ’20, and James Chung ’20, who were playing stringed instruments on the patio of the School’s newly-renovated front entrance.
Once inside the Lower School, several took the opportunity to find their class plaque and graduation photo, step into their former classrooms, and peruse memorabilia from their days as a Calvert student.
Thirty-nine classes were represented at the cocktail reception, ranging from the Class of 1943 to the Class of 2014, and the alumni in attendance came from 10 different states: CA, DE, FL, MD, NJ, NY, PA, TN, VA, and DC. Several former and current faculty members attended to reconnect with their past students, including Calvert’s fifth Head Master, Merrill Hall, who led the School from 1983 to 2004 and now resides in New Orleans.
After an hour of fellowship, guests took a seat in the Lower School auditorium for the presentation of Calvert’s inaugural Distinguished Alumni Award, which was presented to Albert H. “Hill” Michaels, Jr. from the Class of 1951. Before Hill accepted the award, alumni and friends heard remarks from Head Master Andrew Holmgren and Alumni Board President Clemmie Miller '81.
When speaking about Hill and all that he has achieved for Calvert, Holmgren said, “Hill’s unwavering support of Calvert has led to many great and impactful alumni programs. I am always impressed by his passion and the passion you, our alumni, have for Calvert, from the intense pride you feel as a Calvert graduate to your ongoing commitment in assuring a strong future for Calvert.”
“Through the Distinguished Alumni Award, the Alumni Board seeks to honor alumni who embody the Calvert mission in their communities and those who have distinguished themselves through their outstanding service to Calvert and the Alumni Board,” Miller continued, “We are so thankful for Hill, who epitomizes the character that is synonymous with a Calvert graduate.”
In accepting the speech, Hill said, “You can kid about anything you want, but Calvert School gave me the basis for any success I’ve had in business and any other area of my life.”
After the award presentation, 60 alumni from classes ending in 4s and 9s walked to 2 Oak Place for a seated dinner on the terrace, where tables were organized by class year. The reunion classes collectively raised more than $38,500 in support of the School. The Class of 1959 had the highest percentage of donors during the reunion year, while the Class of 1969 had the largest percentage of classmates return for reunion.
Earlier in the day, eight graduates from the Class of 1954 gathered at the Elkridge Club for a luncheon before their reunion celebration at Calvert. Gee Harvey Wheeler ‘54 shared old newspapers, drawings, and articles written by her classmates in the Eleventh Age. Several from this class, including Gee and Sally Gordon Roberts ‘54, made a special trip to Baltimore to honor their 65th reunion.
