Father-Daughter Alumni Duo Share Special Interest
In April, Kelsey Albert ’08 and Charlie Albert ’72 sat down with Carly Slagel, Director of Alumni Relations, to discuss their father-daughter acting experience. Kelsey has been performing since she was in Seventh Grade when she and her dad first appeared together in the Memorial Players rendition of Cats.
Kelsey continued to perform during her four years at Mercersburg Academy where she participated in the musical. During her time at Wheaton College, she joined one of the a capella groups and continued to improve her voice.
Recently, Kelsey participated in the musical The Producers with Third Wall Productions which ran from May 3 to May 12. Kelsey shared, “Mamma Mia this spring was the busiest time I’ve had in a show. There were lots of costume changes and music to learn. The women’s ensemble sang in 26 songs and the men’s ensemble in 24!”
Charlie also began performing at a young age. He was a part of the Glee Club and Traveling Men at Gilman School. He was also an original member of The Richmond Revelers a capella group at the University of Richmond.
Kelsey and Charlie have performed in seven shows together over the years. As members of the Memorial Players community theater, they have performed in Cats, Mame, and The Secret Garden. They also perform with the Charm City Players in Shrek the Musical, The Wizard of Oz, Mamma Mia, and Willy Wonka the Musical. Willy Wonka is set to open on June 22 and will run through July 14. Tickets are still available and are $15.
Kelsey and Charlie’s commitment to performance is especially impressive considering neither are full-time actors. Charlie mentioned that “Today’s technology helps. Choreography can now be filmed on your smartphone and you’re able to practice at home.”
They both work on their craft outside of rehearsals by taking voice lessons, practicing choreography, and rehearsing songs through the RehearScore App. There are many opportunities to get involved in a theater group in Baltimore – several companies with robust schedules.
