A New Leadership Certificate Program in our Middle School

Calvert School is proud to announce the launch of our Leadership Certificate for our Seventh and Eighth Grade students. Sponsored by The Institute for Leadership & Purpose, the Leadership Certificate provides an opportunity for interested students to engage in a deeper learning experience over their final two years at Calvert. Elements of this new program include weekly meetings, guest speakers, cornerstone projects, and a leadership portfolio. Last spring, thirty-two Sixth Grade students were accepted into the certificate program, and this fall they have entered as our inaugural, Seventh Grade cohort.
On Friday, September 13th, the program officially kicked off with Head Master Holmgren addressing the young leaders. The topic was “finding your path,” and he discussed his own path to becoming an educator. Anna K. ’21 recalls, “It was fun to hear how Mr. Holmgren’s path could have gone in many directions, but why he chose to be a teacher over all his other choices.”

The Leadership Certificate aspires for each student to discover his or her own path over their final two years. Students have chosen one of four focus areas to learn more about within this program. These include sustainability, health & wellness, fine arts, and social justice. Students within each group work with a faculty guide over the course of the program who mentors them through their projects, presentations, and portfolio. Special thanks to Middle School faculty members Sandry Sachar, Alexis Tantau, Eric Cowell, Owen Rossi, Joe Ali, Angel Menefee, Terri Merwin, and Brian Vaught for serving as guides and advisors.

Jeff E. ’21 states, “I wanted to be in this program so I can document all the ways I am involved at Calvert, and make a bigger impact in my final two years here.”

Looking ahead, stay tuned for the Spring Leadership Event when their work will be on full display.
