Calvert School and St. Elizabeth School Take The Plunge

On Thursday, January 23rd, 15 Seventh Graders and the entire Eighth Grade class participated in the 2020 Cool Schools Plunge, part of the Polar Bear Plunge to support the Special Olympics of Maryland, along with students from Calvert’s partner, St. Elizabeth School.
Students arrived early at Sandy Point State Park for the exciting day. The skies were clear, the sun was shining, and students from the two schools were ready to plunge into the chilly Bay.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that Calvert and St. Elizabeth School partnered to participate in the plunge. Students and teachers from both schools gathered at the Bay to support the Special Olympics of Maryland. “It was a really cool experience because we are doing it for a great cause,” said Seventh Grader Amelia Giese ’20. She and her friend, Piper Block ’20, were warming up on the beach after they took the plunge in the 34-degree water. Piper piggybacked off Amelia’s experience “My feet are numb, but I look forward to doing it again next year!”

The inspiration throughout this initiative was Team Sutton and the Clark Family. Oliver ’20, Este ’25, and Sutton, whose Team Sutton has raised outstanding funds and awareness about the Special Olympics. Oliver and his buddy Terrence braved the cold and took the plunge. “Today was amazing. Greatest year yet!” Oliver beamed with excitement, “It was great to plunge with all my friends.” Terrence happily agreed, “Today was awesome!”

Each student was given a challenge to raise between $50 and $200 towards Team Calvert’s fundraising goal, and many voluntarily decide to “plunge” into the Chesapeake Bay. Team Calvert and St. Elizabeth School raised an impressive $15,290 for this great cause. Calvert was the highest fundraising independent school in Maryland. Fantastic job Mighty Bees and Eagles!

Thank you to all participants from Calvert School and St. Elizabeth School who joined for the Cool Schools Plunge. It truly was a splashing success!
