Surprise Moving Up Ceremony Celebrates Fifth Graders

Calvert Fifth Graders enjoyed fun, games, and frozen treats on Krongard Field yesterday during a surprise Moving Up Ceremony that marked their rise to Middle School.
The socially distanced event, which included remarks from Middle School Head Matt Buck and Lower School Head Elizabeth Martin, celebrated our boys and girls for their amazing Lower School achievements and many successes still to come.

“You have shown us that you have a vigorous energy and you are exciting, and you have a love of friendly competition and achievement,” Mr. Buck said, addressing the Class of 2024. “We have seen that in you, and you are also very kind and thoughtful. We are so excited that you are now Middle Schoolers.”

Usually held in the spring, last year’s Tenth Age Moving Up Ceremony was delayed due to COVID-19. Just a few months later, yesterday’s event provided a safe, exciting alternative for celebrating the Class of 2024.

“It’s important to acknowledge that this is a rite of passage for you,” Mr. Buck told the students.

Rather than gather in the Lower School auditorium, the Fifth Graders met on Krongard Field for games of Ultimate Frisbee and Laxball, reflecting their interest in athletics and friendly competition. Mrs. Martin and Mr. Buck then continued the tradition of presenting each student with a personalized certificate marking their completion of Lower School. Later, everyone enjoyed an extra-sweet surprise – a visit from the Miss Twist ice cream truck.

“I hope that this certificate will serve as a reminder, a symbol, of your many accomplishments over the years in the Lower School – all the way from the pajama party in Fifth Age to your state report and then finally moving on to the Middle School,” Mrs. Martin told the boys and girls.

Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
