Remembering Tom Cassilly ‘35
Thomas A. Cassilly, III, '35 born May 8, 1923, in Baltimore, MD, died in New York, NY, on April 28, 2021.
Thomas graduated from Calvert in 1935 and Gilman in 1941. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he served in the Army until 1945. For his actions as an artillery observer for the 104th Infantry Division in Europe, Thomas was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the French Croix de Guerre.
Thomas graduated from Princeton University in 1947 and became a Foreign Service Officer in 1950. His diplomatic postings included Martinique, South Korea, Iran, and countries in French-speaking Africa.
After leaving the State Department in 1972, Thomas earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University. Beginning in 1978, he taught International Relations at Montclair State University, Manhattanville College, and Fordham University. He retired in his late 80s.
Thomas loved art, history, classical music, and books. His intelligence, wit, and generosity will be sorely missed. He is preceded in death by his siblings Elizabeth D. Cassilly, Helen O. Collery, and J. Stuart Cassilly. Survivors include his wife Carolyn P. Cassilly; his nephew Peter M. Collery; his niece Elizabeth D. Collery; and his sister-in-law Eleanor Shriver Cassilly. Due to the Covid pandemic, no memorial service is currently scheduled.
