CBS Sports Reporter and Calvert Parent Evan Washburn Gives Virtual Talk

CBS Sports reporter and Calvert parent Evan Washburn spoke to the alumni and parent community on February 17, providing a recap of the Super Bowl and a preview of March Madness.
Evan answered a range of questions, both reflecting on his personal experience and the evolution of his career, as well as his insights into this year’s Super Bowl and upcoming March Madness.

Evan highlighted the amount of preparation he puts into sideline reporting, “The preparation is unique in a lot of ways because we’re only on air for three hours on Sunday, and if you do the math, I’m probably only on camera for a minute, a minute thirty, and you’re only hearing my voice between three minutes to five minutes depending on the game and what’s happening. That in itself doesn’t seem like a lot, but I would say Monday through Thursday, it’s probably four to five hours a day in terms of prep where you’re reading, listening, and watching everything possible to be an expert on those two teams. [T]hen you land in the host city of a game, and you meet with both teams, players, and coaches in person… And then it’s all about being perfect for those three hours [of the game].”

Evan continued, “Sideline reporting is probably the easiest job to do but the hardest job to do well.”

Evan Washburn was named reporter for THE NFL ON CBS in June 2014 and also serves as a college basketball reporter, studio host, and lacrosse analyst for CBS Sports Network.

He serves as a sideline reporter with the announce team of Ian Eagle and Charles Davis. Evan was on the sidelines as a reporter for Super Bowl LV in 2021, Super Bowl LIII in 2019, and Super Bowl 50 in 2016. He has served as a contributing reporter on THE NFL TODAY and THAT OTHER PREGAME SHOW, CBS Sports Network’s Sunday pre-game studio show.

Evan graduated from the University of Delaware in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He played college lacrosse for four years, leading Delaware to the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2007. As team captain in 2008, Washburn was selected All-CAA Conference First Team. He currently resides in Baltimore.
