The resilience! The teamwork! The mental fortitude! After being on a win streak with a cumulative score of 14-2, the girls could have lost their edge and crumbled in the face of adversity. Instead, they mounted not one, but two comebacks in a single game and withstood a last minute push to win one of the most hotly contended matches I've experienced in my 9 years of coaching Calvert soccer. 
Despite playing well from the opening whistle, the girls fell behind 1-0 early. However, they were able to respond later with a beautiful combination of passes up the sideline, leading to a inch perfect cross into the box that was finished with aplomb (a volley in the air with the weaker foot no less). Despite our hard work though, Garrison was able to retake their lead before the halftime whistle, sending us into the break with a 2-1 deficit. You wouldn't know we were down from the attitude of the players though, as they were confident in their ability to come out roaring in the second half, just as we have the past two matches.
With that confidence of past performances, the girls did just that. We took advantage of some poor passing from their defenders to tie it back up early in the half. Then, as the game wore on and our depth became more of an advantage, we were able to take the lead and even grab an insurance goal for good measure on a beautiful lobbed pass over the top of the defense, which turned out to be fortunate. In the game's dying moments, our opponents were awarded yet another penalty, our third in three games. After converting the penalty the score was 4-3, but with only a few minutes left we were able to control the ball enough in a frantic ending to hold on to our fourth win in a row. It was an inspiring performance that showed the true grit and determination of the whole team. It was a performance every single girl contributed to and could be proud of!
