Students Claim First Place at Io Saturnalia Certamen
On Saturday, December 17 — just one day after Winter Break began — Middle Schoolers Claire S. '23, Johanna P.' 23, Liam D.' 23, and Esme I. '23 claimed first place in the novice division of the Io Saturnalia Certamen. The team scored an astounding 465 points and won all four matches at the novice level, a feat witnessed by surprise supporter Matt Buck '87.
Hosted by Eleanor Roosevelt High School near Washington, D.C., the competition featured fewer teams than previous competitions this season but included a few familiar faces, including recent Calvert graduates Teo Garza '22 and Jack Mashaw '22, who represented Gilman.
