Sixth Grade and Ninth Age Students Attend Inauguration of Maryland Governor Wes Moore

Calvert’s classes of 2025 and 2028 – more than 125 students in total – participated in a unique experiential learning opportunity last month, when these grades traveled to Annapolis to witness the inauguration of Governor Wes Moore, who was elected to office in November 2022. The trip allowed students to view the peaceful transition of power, a facet of American democracy, firsthand, encouraging them to nurture their natural interest in community engagement and purpose-driven leadership.
As part of this experience, students had the opportunity to view the entire inauguration ceremony “up close,” from a reserved area on the Maryland State House lawn. Settled on a sunny platform not far from the festivities, the students watched special performances from notable local groups and heard remarks from public figures including Oprah Winfrey, Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, and Governor Moore, who outlined priorities for his administration.

Shortly after returning from this impactful trip, a group of Sixth Grade students recounted their experience for their fellow Middle Schoolers and provided context and additional information about the event. They presented these findings and key takeaways during a Middle School Assembly toward the end of January.

Thank you to Maryland’s new First Family for inviting Calvert students to witness this important American tradition and notable moment in history.
