Calvert School Hosts Nationally Ranked Penn vs. UVA Men’s Varsity Squash

Last night, Calvert School hosted two of the top five nationally ranked men’s collegiate squash teams for competitive matches on neutral ground in the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center at Calvert School. This event marked the first major collegiate competition hosted on Calvert School’s campus, where the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center, a premier squash facility, opened this fall.
The visit to Calvert held extra significance for University of Virginia senior Cullen Little, a Calvert School graduate, as UVA went up against the University of Pennsylvania.

Penn defeated UVA by a score of 8-1. The win for Penn solidifies their number two ranking going into the national championships next week, taking place at Trinity College. All nine matches from last night were closely contested, specifically Little who went to the wire in a nail-biting five-game thriller, narrowly losing by a score of 14-16, 9-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-6.

“Cullen played some of the best squash I have ever seen him play. He made Calvert proud,” Calvert Director of Squash Patrick Bedore said.

“Baltimore has the most enthusiastic squash program in the country, in my opinion. It was an honor to partner last night with top-notch collegiate players led by two of the best squash coaches, Gilly Lane from Penn and Mark Allen from UVA,” said Bedore.

Neutral ground for the night’s competition, Baltimore is home to a growing squash scene that was aided by the introduction of the Luetkemeyer Athletic Center in 2022. The facility features ten squash courts and an indoor turf facility that are available for the School’s physical education classes, middle school sporting events, and the expansion of the Calvert Squash program, which aims to introduce students and community members to the sport.

Jack Luetkemeyer, from Calvert’s class of 1953, and his wife, Susie, provided the cornerstone donation to support the construction of the building, which aligned with Calvert’s 125th anniversary.
