Josh Perry '96 Receives Distinguished Alumni Award

Congratulations to Josh Perry '96, this year's Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. With the Distinguished Alumni Award, the Alumni Board seeks to honor an alumna or alumnus who embodies the Calvert mission in their communities. The purpose of the Distinguished Alumni Award is to provide recognition to those individuals in the alumni family who have distinguished themselves through professional accomplishments, service to the community or a philanthropic mission, or outstanding service to Calvert and/or the Alumni Board. Josh has distinguished himself in all of these ways and more. He is most deserving of this recognition.
Alumni Board President Charlie Albert '72 presented Josh with the award at the Alumni Cocktail Party on May 13, sharing the following remarks:

"Josh is a Baltimore native, and he joined the Calvert family in Seventh Age. After graduating from the great class of 1996, he had a successful term at McDonogh both academically and athletically.  Inspired by Calvert Field Days, Josh ran track at McDonogh where he set a school record in the 800-meter race that stood for 15 years.

A fan of the orange and black colors, Josh went on to attend Princeton University, continuing his track pursuits, and majoring in Financial Engineering. After a brief stint working in the commodity divisions of investment banks Credit Suisse and JP Morgan, the Great Financial Crisis occurred, blamed largely on financial engineering.

Josh pivoted, coming back to Baltimore to work at Constellation Energy, continuing his work in commodities in the Structuring and Pricing group. Anticipating that the presidential administration may shift on environmental regulation, Josh applied to University of Chicago Booth School of Business with plans to ultimately work in carbon trading on the newly formed Chicago Climate Exchange.

That administration decided to pursue health care instead of a carbon market, but Josh still decided to attend business school, graduating with concentrations in Analytic Finance and Strategic Management. During his time in business school, he focused on gaining expertise in Fixed Income, eventually getting experience at Driehaus Capital Management, working with high yield investments in liquid alternative mutual funds.

Josh returned to Baltimore in 2012. He is now a partner at the investment firm Brown Advisory, where he works on the Fixed Income team as a Portfolio Manager for Municipal funds and strategies, managing more than $1 Billion and the 5-star Brown Advisory Tax Exempt Bond Fund.

While working at Brown Advisory, Josh also attended law school at night at the University of Baltimore, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude, and received the Law Faculty Award, given to a graduate exhibiting outstanding scholarship, leadership, and service.

He has also been very active in the community.  Josh serves on the boards of the Walters Art Museum (where he is a Vice President, and Chair of the Audit Committee), the Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust, and the CollegeBound Foundation.  In addition to his board service, he is also a member of the Investment Committee of the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation.

One of Josh’s proudest achievements, however, is having served on the board of Calvert for 8 years, where he was Chair of the Investment Committee, as well as a member of the Compensation, Finance, and Executive Committees.

The positive response from alumni and fellow Calvert Trustees has been overwhelming. We all agree that you are most deserving of this recognition and our gratitude. In fact, one of Josh’s classmates and friends, Alumni Board member Reuel Belt '96 sends his well wishes from Los Angeles, CA. While Ru could not be with us this evening, he shared a special message:

'Josh is one of my oldest friends. He's someone you can call upon day or night for advice, a favor or a laugh. It is no surprise to me or anyone else that he has accomplished so much in his life and career. From his charitable work in the community as a trustee, to his accomplishments as a sought-after strategic advisor in the investment and finance industry, Josh exudes a character of excellence and humility. Tonight's well deserved honor demonstrates Josh's discipline to remain true to himself, and it recognizes the principles instilled in him during his youth. Josh has consistently represented what it means to be a Silhouette Child. Congratulations, my friend, for this award. You make the entire Calvert School family shine!'

Josh, thank you for your service to Calvert and to the Baltimore community. As Andrew mentioned, we are proud to call you a Calvert alumnus, and we are a better School for having you in the community.

If you could please join me here at the podium. Josh, on behalf of the Calvert School Alumni Board, it is an honor to present you with the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award. Thank you for your significant contributions."
