Fall Athletics Are Underway

Fall athletics are in full gear, and all of our teams are having great seasons! Many Sixth through Eighth Graders came out this year, filling 10 teams in six different sports: cross country, field hockey, flag football, football, soccer, and volleyball.
Several of our cross country runners placed in the top 20 out of 200 runners at their first meet, and the field hockey teams participated in tournaments at Garrison Forrest and Friends on Saturday. The Sixth Grade boys on the flag football team won their first game against St. Paul’s, and the football team won their first game against St. Paul’s last week. The girls’ and boys’ soccer teams have looked great in their games so far, as did the volleyball team in their season opener on Friday.

Win or lose, for our young athletes, being on a team is about sportsmanship and camaraderie. Some teams have “psych up” buddies that exchange small gifts to get excited before a game, while others can be heard across the field cheering on their teammates. Coach Gentry emphasizes this camaraderie with her field hockey A team. “As coaches, we can focus on sportsmanship, teamwork, and developing foundational athletic skills. The lasting friendships that are cultivated on these teams and the athletic growth displayed on the field are some of the most wonderful parts of coaching.”

Fall athletics continue into the first week of November, so come out to a game and show your yellow jacket pride!
