3rd Annual Walk for Water
The Fifth Grade participated in the 3rd Annual Walk for Water on Friday morning. Students walked, or in many cases ran, 30 laps around the track at Johns Hopkins’ Homewood Stadium to raise money for Water for South Sudan, a non-profit organization that provides access to clean, safe water.
The organization was founded by Salva Dut, one of Sudan’s Lost Boys who was adopted by an American family and remembered that one of the biggest challenges in his home country is a lack of clean water. His story was told in A Long Walk to Water, a book that the Fifth Grade read over the summer.
Students also had the opportunity to Skype with the award-winning Newbery author of the book, Linda Sue Park, to learn more about writing and this culture and cause. This interaction aided in the development of brochures that students used to educate friends and family in order to solicit pledges. Their efforts raised over $10,000, which is enough to fund another well for a village in South Sudan.
Friday’s walk was the culmination of a semester’s focus on South Sudan, helping to weave together the many lessons about global awareness and appreciation of other cultures. Parents came to walk, cheer, and give support as our kids walked over a total of 1,700 laps!
