Sixth Graders Use “Design-Thinking” to Help Blakehurst Residents

This year, Sixth Grade students are partnering with residents of Blakehurst for a cooperative community service program. In an ongoing Design-Thinking project, students will tackle the real-life challenges that the residents face as they age. Our students hosted a panel of Blakehurst residents and staff in January, when they learned about the benefits and challenges of aging through a Q & A session. Following that discussion, the students worked in small groups to identify some of the most prevalent issues the residents face, and they brainstormed possible solutions.
Recently, the Sixth Grade student groups presented their ideas and design prototypes to a panel of experts at Calvert School. Based on this feedback and continued discussion, the students will continue to expand upon their designs. Throughout the process, students will also be traveling in groups to Blakehurst where they will further forge friendships with residents as they engage in activities like Wii bowling, iPad training, and life story recordings. In May, students will present their best solutions to another panel of Blakehurst residents and hopefully offer viable solutions that will be implemented at the facility.
