Creativity and Compassion

This week, two special community outreach events took place. Seventh Graders packaged meals for Stop Hunger Now on Monday, and students created blankets for children in need during Buddy Day on Wednesday.
Seventh Graders hosted a meal-packaging event with Stop Hunger Now, a non-profit organization that gets food and life-saving aid to the world’s most vulnerable people. The students were first educated on global hunger and then got to work to fight it. Through an assembly line, the students filled, sealed, and boxed meal bags that feed six people, have a shelf life of two years, and consist of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and a flavoring mix that includes 23 essential vitamins and minerals. The meals are then shipped throughout the world to support school feeding programs, orphanages, and crisis relief.

Thank you to the students, teachers, and parent Staci Shelley for organizing this event!

For this semester’s Buddy Day, “Pig and a Blanket,” younger students paired with their Middle School buddies, who became role models and friends. Together, they created no-sew fleece blankets for Project Linus, an organization that provides blankets to children in need. Since 1998, Project Linus has delivered over five million blankets that provide love, a sense of security, and warmth.

Much preparation went into the day. Helpers divided and cut 150 yards of fleece and Mrs. Kamp created heart-shaped tags with the Calvert logo. Students then added a special note and tied them around the finished blankets. Last week in assembly, the Middle School learned about the organization and how to create the blankets so they could lead their Lower School buddies. Fay Husted, the leader of the local chapter of Project Linus visited campus to share this information and returned to help on Buddy Day.

The students also enjoyed visits from Hamilton, the pig (Mr. Shep was nowhere to be found!), who brought joy and jokes to the day! Thank you to all who made this a successful day. This is a special time for Calvert to come together as acommunity and is an opportunity to be creative and to show compassion for one another and for others.
