Winter Sports Buzz 2017

The cold winter air does not slow down the Mighty Bees!
Winter sports at Calvert School are up and running. This season there are five basketball teams, three squash teams, and an ice hockey team. Both ice hockey and squash teams practice in the morning, off campus, and we can’t thank our parents enough for making that dark, cold drive to drop off their athletes at the clubs.

The basketball teams are busy each afternoon, moving between the Lower School and the Middle School, utilizing Calvert’s three gyms. Although space is sometimes tight, the coaches and athletes make the most of their spaces while teaching skills and having fun in preparation of their games.

Ice hockey has its first match of the season this week at Upland Country Day School. All players are excited about their first game, and we know they will play well. The squash players already have many matches under their belt, with wins at both the A and B level. Also, the squash developmental team will have its first intramural match at Bare Hills this week. The athletes are on a Black and Gold team and they will go head-to-head for about an hour at Bare Hills.

Most of the basketball teams have had games already, and each team is doing great. We are around halfway through the season, and the improvement in all teams is visible. Each athlete shows improvement and their hard work reflects in each match they play.

Finally, we are happy to announce that once again, Calvert will head to Yale University for Middle School Squash Team Championships. Representing Calvert will be B level boys’ team and C level girls’ team, and both teams have six players attending. It has always been one of the most rewarding and memorable events that these players have while attending Calvert. Wish us luck, and good weather! (Last year's championship was canceled due to snow.)
