Students Present at AIMS Learning to Lead

Students, teachers, and administrators came together on March 30th at Gilman School for AIMS Learning to Lead 2017. This annual event is an opportunity for schools to hear from inspirational speakers and reflect on how to best foster leadership in young people. Calvert parent and Baltimore City Councilman Leon Pinkett served as the day's opening speaker delivering a powerful message on how social justice and equity are a key tenets in leadership development for our youth.
The theme of Learning to Lead 2017 was "building cultures of inclusive leadership." Calvert students Daniel O., Scotty G., Faith C., Gib S., and Sarah W. played an integral role in the day's success, leading the workshop "The Empathy Advantage: Infusing Empathy into Leadership Development." Eighth Grader Sarah W. stated, "The basic goal of our workshop was to demonstrate that empathy can be taught, and we shared specific ways this has been done at Calvert the past year."

Calvert students have had many opportunities to learn about empathy and let it show through in their leadership this year. Eighth Grader Faith C. shared these events, noting that there has been an "increase in service opportunities in the middle school. As an Eighth Grader, I participated in Bees for BARCS, the Polar Bear Plunge, and again this year I was part of MLK Day of Service."

Their enthusiastic and interactive workshop received praise from attendees throughout the day. "Empathy is an idea we have discussed all year in Diversity Club, and it was fun sharing our personal stories with the teachers from other schools," said Seventh Grader Daniel O.
