Seventh Grade Day of Service

On Friday, April 21st, Calvert Seventh Graders participated in their Spring Day of Service. The day kicked off with an inspirational reflection on service leadership by Mr. Rob English of Baltimore United in Leadership Development and Ms. Samirah Franklin of the Baltimore Youth Organizing Project. Ms. Franklin, at just 19 years old, is an experienced community organizer. She shared her own story of wanting to make a difference in Baltimore and how even as young people, students can take action. This is an important message for our Seventh Graders to hear as they look forward to leading Calvert as Eighth Graders in the fall.
Throughout the day, the boys and girls worked hard and with great optimism on four service projects. One group volunteered at Paul’s Place Outreach Center in Pigtown, serving lunch to the homeless. Another crew worked with Art with a Heart, a Hampden-based community arts organization. The third team of volunteers picked up litter along Stony Run as part of Project Clean Stream. “It was cool to be able to clean up Stony Run. At the stream, we picked up trash and cut overgrowing plants. The city has invested a lot into the Stony Run restoration recently, and it felt good helping them out.” said Tyler T. A final group of students worked on Calvert’s campus to beautify the property through weeding and planting.

The day was spearheaded by Seventh Graders Shep S., Narimon Z., Luke I., Tyler T., and Will A., all of whom should be recognized for helping put together a wonderful day for their classmates and Calvert School. Shep S. shared, “The goal of the day was to give the Seventh Graders a chance to make a difference on and off campus while still having fun. Plus, it was great that the Tenth Age was able to join us in the morning to hear from our guest speakers.”
