Calvert School Hosts AIMS Service Learning Workshop

On Thursday, September 28th Calvert School hosted a professional workshop on best practices in service learning through the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS).
AIMS Building Partnerships was a sold out event bringing together over 50 area educators, nonprofit coordinators, and student leaders from across the region. The theme of the day centered around how meaningful community outreach is grounded in creating strong, sustainable relationships across schools and community partners. Guest speakers included Jayna Powell of Paul’s Place, Lynne Kahn of Baltimore Hunger Project, Alex Warrick-Adams of Elev8 Baltimore, Gwen Kokes of Civic Works, and Terrell Williams of Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development. Student presenters from Park School, Calvert School, Roland Park Country School, and Glenelg Country School were the highlight of the day, drawing unanimous praise from attendees. Our own Calvert alumnae from the Class of 2017, now at RPCS, returned to discuss their leadership experiences spearheading the evolution of Bees for BARCS. Thank you to Ms. Leonard and our Eighth Grade Community Outreach Captains for helping to plan such a wonderful event!

Responses from our teacher attendees included:
“Thank you so much for this workshop. My colleague and left with tons of ideas and lots of encouragement for a better program in our own school.” - Diana Talbott, Severn School

“I so enjoyed the workshop last Thursday! Thank you for including me and for welcoming me at Calvert. The day ran smoothly, and you all thought of everything! I was especially impressed with the involvement of the students!” Christine Green, Our Lady of Mercy

We also received great feedback from a student attendee. “It was such an honor to be involved in the workshop! I have never been to anything like it, and it was such an amazing experience. There were so many ideas about how we can help our community and how students my age can make a difference. Thank you all so much for letting me come!” - Gwen Smith
