Eighth Grader, Pieter H., Awarded Chess National Master Title

In the last weekend of November, the National Chess Congress was held in Philadelphia and Pieter came in second place for his section. What is most notable for Pieter is that after his last tournament, he is officially named a National Master by the United States Chess Federation (USCF).
Pieter H. ’18 can say something not many can; he is a US Chess National Master. According to the USCF, less than one percent of rated players achieve this title. Pieter is ranked nationally in the top 12 players aged thirteen and younger. The USCF awards the title of National Master to members who receive a rating of 2,200 or higher. While this title is rare for adults, it is even more of a rarity among teenagers. Pieter is ranked 24th in the state and in the 99.5 percentile for juniors, nationally. We wish Pieter much success in his future tournaments, and we are proud to have him at Calvert!
