Calvert Community Honors Dr. King's Vision

On Monday, January 15th, the Calvert community answered Dr. King’s question of “what are we doing for others?” We held our ninth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service with over 260 community members joining together to participate in a variety of activities in honor of Dr. King's vision and legacy of kindness, equality, and service.
Our Day of Service began with words from Mr. Holmgren, students and teachers singing an uplifting song, and Ms. Tyson reading “My Brother Martin,” written by Martin Luther King’s sister. After our opening assembly, parents, friends, relatives, and children dispersed to their designated area throughout our Middle School to engage in a variety of service activities. These activities help meet the needs within our communities - blankets for the elderly to stay warm; study aids for after school city programs; “hope” chests to bring a smile to children in shelters; and many others.

Our Seventh and Eighth Grade Diversity Club members stepped up to fill leadership roles throughout the day - organizing, setting up, running activities, and cleaning up the Atrium after projects were complete. Together, various community members such as faculty, staff, and parents served as activity proctors and leaders, while working in tandem with our Seventh and Eighth Grader Leaders.

Outside of our current families, we had members of our alumni return to campus to volunteer and participate. In addition to our Calvert community, we were fortunate to welcome back players from Johns Hopkins University’s baseball team to assist leaders and participants throughout the day. This is the fourth year in a row we have welcomed our neighbors from JHU to our Day of Service.

Lastly, this day would not be a total success without the help of our incredible Maintenance and Kitchen Staff. This event truly touches our entire community. It is easy to see why it is one of our most attended events. We look forward to continuing this tradition each year.
