2018 Middle School Leadership Summit

Calvert School recently hosted the fourth annual Middle School Leadership Summit. The event welcomed over 130 students from a dozen area schools and celebrated the theme of civility as an element of effective, 21st-century leadership. For the first time, Calvert co-hosted the leadership summit, collaborating with Garrison Forest School to ensure an even stronger, more inclusive program. Without question, the willingness to partner eagerly with another school exemplifies how our independent schools collectively see leadership as a key tenet of our mission to inspire the best in students. Building good citizens is not just the mission of Calvert, it is a vision shared across the independent school community.
The keynote speaker at the event was Mr. Augie Chiasera, President of M&T Bank of Maryland. Mr. Chiasera enthusiastically engaged the students and discussed how he leads with civility in the business world. He explained to the students how he strives to treat each employee with civility through respect, care, and empathy. He shared with the students, "even as I wake up each day with the goal to do my best, I often wonder and question if I am truly up to the task of being a good leader." In closing, he offered that every student has the potential to be a leader. "We all get butterflies in our stomach. That just means we care; don't confuse it with the idea that real leaders have nerves of steel, that's just a myth." In the end, leaders know that doing the right thing will prevail.

Calvert students led various activities throughout the day. These activities included a design-build challenge, a discussion block, and two student-led workshops. Eighth Graders A.J. C., Kendall S., Will L., and Annie O. shared with students and faculty about the success of the Injured Athletes Club, and how it has inspired leadership and meaningful discussion amongst Calvert’s Middle School students. Additionally, Eighth Graders Gwen S. and Ashton M. facilitated a workshop on Community Building & Civility highlighting the successes of Calvert’s Cool Schools Plunge and Bees for BARCS initiatives.

Seventh Grade students share some reflections from the day:

“When my team led a design-build challenge it was interesting to see how different teams made of students from various schools worked together. It set the tone for the day ” - Finn M.

“My favorite part of the day at the leadership summit conference was learning from other schools and hearing about their successes. I loved all the cool ideas to build school spirit and bring communities together. I am inspired to leave my mark on Calvert before I graduate!” - Natalie L.
