High School Placement

Personal Guidance. Thoughtful Choices. Confident Next Steps.
Choosing a high school is an important milestone. At Calvert School, we guide each student and family through the process with thoughtful planning, personalized support, and dedicated advocacy. Our High School Placement Team helps students find schools where they can thrive academically, socially, and personally—and enter their next chapter with confidence.

Beginning in Seventh Grade
The placement process begins in March of Seventh Grade with an on-campus evening introducing students and families to a wide range of options, including independent day and boarding schools, parochial schools, and public magnet programs. Information sessions and individual consultations help families explore the learning environments best suited to their child’s strengths, interests, and goals.

At the end of Seventh Grade, an overnight retreat gives students time to reflect on their Calvert experience and begin thinking more intentionally about high school. Working with World Leadership School, students explore their gifts and sense of purpose, building self-awareness that helps inform their school choices.

Building Skills and Confidence
Beginning in the spring of Seventh Grade and continuing through the fall of Eighth Grade, students have access to an online platform for standardized test preparation. Regular practice builds familiarity with test formats while strengthening skills that support success on standardized assessments and in the classroom.

In Eighth Grade, each student is paired with a member of the High School Placement Team who serves as a personal advisor and advocate. Working with the student and family, the advisor develops an application plan that reflects the student’s strengths, interests, values, and aspirations. Students receive individualized support with application essays, interview preparation, and navigating the application process.

Our mock interview program provides an additional opportunity to practice. Calvert faculty and administrators conduct realistic admissions interviews with Eighth Graders, then offer feedback in conversation and in writing. This feedback is shared with students, families, and the Placement Team to guide preparation and encourage self-reflection.

Connecting with Schools and Alumni
Calvert’s annual High School Night brings dozens of local and national independent schools to campus for an evening exclusively for Calvert students and families. Families meet admissions representatives, explore school options, and ask questions in a familiar setting.

Calvert alumni often return to represent their high schools, offering firsthand perspectives on student life and the transition from Calvert. Their experiences help current students envision the possibilities ahead.

Advocating for Every Student
Our commitment extends beyond application preparation. The Head of School, Head of Middle School, and High School Placement Team visit local independent high schools to speak personally on behalf of Calvert applicants. These conversations help admissions teams understand each student’s strengths, character, and potential beyond the written application.

Throughout the process, we partner closely with families and encourage students to take an active role in shaping their next steps. Grounded in Calvert’s mission to inspire a life of purpose, high school placement helps students reflect on who they are, make informed decisions, and move forward with confidence, clarity, and excitement.
