Calvert Students Sing with Peabody Children’s Chorus in Leonard Bernstein’s “MASS"

Two Calvert students, Julia N.’21 and Ava W.’20, recently participated in a spectacular performance of Leonard Bernstein’s MASS under the direction of Marin Alsop. Julia and Ava were selected as two of 45 Peabody Children’s Choir members. This amazing learning experience involved over 450 performers including musicians, dancers, and other music students.
This production has not been performed in Baltimore since 2008. The piece was commissioned to celebrate President John F. Kennedy's life and legacy, was written by Leonard Bernstein in 1970, and was premiered at the opening of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in DC in 1971. The musical genre in MASS is not limited to one but shows influence from musical theatre and opera to rock ballades and blues. The work explores challenging issues of peace and conflict, faith, self-doubt, individuality, etc. and shares an empowering message with the audience.

Congratulations to Julia and Ava on their wonderful performance and dedication!
