A Patriotic Buddy Day

On Tuesday, the whole School celebrated its sixth Calvert Buddy Day! Twice a year, students and adults alike have the opportunity to come together and experience all of the goodness that comes when we are able to show compassion for each other and for those outside our community.
This semester, we partnered with Operation Paperback, a non-profit organization that provides books to wounded warrior programs, veteran hospitals, military families, and deployed soldiers all over the world.

Older students teamed up with younger students to create crafts to send along with the books. Beaded flag keychains and specially decorated eagle thank you cards accompanied the books to help brighten the days of soldiers and their families.

What would Buddy Day be without some corny jokes? Flappy the Flag (thought to be Mr. Shep in costume) was on-hand to make the children laugh.

Jamie Alban '77, a former marine and former Calvert parent, spoke to the Middle School last week about his time in the military and his pride for the United States. He encouraged the students to thank military members and emphasized how this project will mean a lot to its recipients.

Thank you Mr. Alban and Ukazoo Books, which kindly donated 300 books for us to use as part of our project to support the military and their families.
