Calvert Squash Players Travel to US National Championships

The Mighty Bees traveled to Yale University in New Haven, CT to compete in the tenth annual championship.
Calvert athletes represented Maryland in the US Squash US Middle School Team Championships at the end of January. Boys and girls traveled to Yale University seeking the title of National Champions, as they did in 2013. Calvert School is the only school in the area to take their middle school team to the Nationals.

The boys’ team was seeded 9th in the tournament, and ultimately finished fourth. Their match play began on Friday, January 27th against Rye Middle School, in which they were victorious. The boys’ team advanced to the quarter-finals to beat St. Luke’s School. Unfortunately, the boys’ team lost in the semifinals to Shipley Middle School, and Shipley went on the win the division.

The girls’ team, seeded first, began their tournament on Saturday by defeating Sacred Heart in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, the girls did not advance after the semifinals, but they did take third place in the championship with a score of 3-2 over Baldwin School.

Eighth Grader Charlotte G. has attended the championships twice. In her own words, she shares her experience: “Both times I have gone to Yale, that weekend has been a highlight of my year. Going in 2015 was definitely a little more intimidating, as I was one of two Sixth Graders along with one Seventh Grader and nine Eighth Graders. This year, it was the opposite, as I was one of nine Eighth Graders. My position on the team has changed, physically and emotionally from 2015 to 2017. Nevertheless, both times I have been to Yale for Team Championships, I have been comforted by the support of Calvert teammates, boys and girls, no matter their grade, during an intense match or fun practice game. It's so much fun to play with a supportive and energetic team each year, and I'm so happy that this year we were able to come in third!”

We are proud of each of our players for giving it their all! We hope to attend next year’s championships as well. Go Mighty Bees!
